Counseling

Considering the basic rights of clients and visitors to know about the examination procedure, we try to make everything understandable. We explain each and every step from the time of their entry in foundation. Not only this, we also focus on imparting the knowledge for prevention of cancer focusing on cervical and breast.

VIA Screening

VIA test is one of the screening methods that is used for cervical cancer screening. VIA is recommended for pre-cancer screening. It is done using acetic acid and looking at lower part of cervix with a naked eye to detect abnormalities after the use of dilute (5%) acetic acid or vinegar. The area that is abnormal changes into white area that can be visible to naked eye.

Cervical Biopsy

Cervical biopsy is the process of taking a small tissue sample of cervix where abnormality was detected. This helps to find out the possibilities of having pre-cancer and to decide if treatment is necessary or not. Furthermore, it helps to make decision to choose the types of treatment necessary to perform if treatment remains mandatory.

Cold Coagulation/ Cryotherapy

It is the method that is done for the treatment of pre-cancer of cervix. It uses a heat to destroy abnormal areas in cervix. The heated probe can destroy the abnormal tissue/ areas. It is a very simple, easy and non-painful treatment procedure.

Mammography

A mammography, or mammogram, is an X-ray of the breast. It is a screening tool used to detect and diagnose breast cancer. It can find out even a very small cancer growth inside the breast.

Ultrasonography (USG)

Ultrasonography is an imaging technology used to identify internal body parts. It can detect abnormal growth or tumor inside abdomen, breast or any other parts of body.

HPV DNA test

The HPV testing detects the Human Papillomavirus on the cervix, which, if left untreated, may lead to cancer. It involves the doctor or nurse taking a cell sample smoothly from the cervix with a spatula or brush after opening up the area with a speculum. The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes and does not hurt for the most part, though small irritation an discomfort might be felt. Results take approximately a week to get, and if normal, then follow-up is required every 5 years. If abnormal, further investigation and treatment are required.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is the examination of the lower part of uterus and vagina under magnification for identification of potentially abnormal area. Basically, if women have positive screening test, she has to undergo for colposcopy through colposcope (in general term it is a magnifying machine).

LEEP

LEEP is known as Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure. It is a treatment that treats pre-cancer. This procedure is performed to remove abnormal area from cervix. It is done after abnormal cells or potential precancerous lesions are found during VIA or Colposcopy or biopsy result. It is done as an out-patient procedure and does not require hospital admission.

Endometrium Biopsy

An endometrial biopsy is the scrapping of inner surface of uterus, which is the lining of the uterus. This tissue sample can show cell changes due to cancer or variations in hormone levels. It is recommended for women having abnormal or prolonged bleeding.

FNA/ Breast Biopsy

If suspected lump in the breast found during Ultrasound/ Mammography, as per physician suggestion, FNA/ Biopsy is performed.

Training on VIA, Colposcopy and Thermo-coagulation

NCCF also provide training on VIA, Colposcopy and Thermo-coagulation to the medical practitioners such as doctors and nurses.

Tests

VIA Test Procedure

Expose cervix

Apply 5% acetic acid

Wait for 1 minute

Look for white patches

  • VIA Test is a simple 1 minute procedure
  • Give result immediately
  • Does not need sophisticated laboratory support and extra manpower
  • laboratory support and extra manpower
  • Minimal cost
  • Need to repeat every 3 years

HR-HPV DNA Test Procedure

Take a cervical/ vaginal swab

Fix in VTM tube

Transfer to laboratory

Dispatch report

  • HPV DNA test is a simple procure of taking vaginal/cervical swab
  • Can be performed on self-collected or physician collected sample
  • Highly sensitive and WHO recommended as primary screening method
  • Costly as requires laboratory; but needs less handling effort and has minimum chances of error
  • Need to repeat every 5 year

Cytology Test Procedure (Pap Smear Test/ Liquid Based Cytology)

Sample Collection

Transfer to Lab

Lab Processing

Pathologist

Report

  • Need 4 to 5 people.
  • Chances of error very high if necessary quality control not maintained
  • Laboratory support is must
  • Costly
  • Result might take a week
  • Need repeated visits to doctor
  • Sensitivity is less than VIA Test

And that is the reason NCCF shifted to HPV DNA Test followed by VIA or Colposcopy
    test followed by colposcopy.
